These Days: A Picnic in Space
On a whim, we threw together a picnic yesterday afternoon and headed for the ampitheater (or, if you’re Simon and Ian “ampitheteor,” rhymes with “ampi-meteor”) at Pioneers Park. After lunch the boys wanted to show us their two forts (the spaces behind the bushes on either side of the stage), and we passed a lovely […]
Kindergarten, First Day
Up before his alarm — and before anyone else in the house — he puts on the clothes he so carefully chose and laid out last night. How did he get so big? I wonder. (Lots of birthdays, he would answer. When he says this, I do not know if he is making a joke […]

The Tooth Fairy Situation
So Simon lost a tooth yesterday. I am unwilling to admit that he is actually old enough to start losing teeth for real (he’s not quite 5 1/2), so I’m finding comfort in the fact that he loosened this one himself a couple of weeks ago by trying to open a bottle with his teeth. […]
Some Like It Hot

These Days: Bubbles
It was not quite warm enough to spend hours outside today, so we made some fun inside. The boys were entertained for about twenty minutes (I was hoping for more). Clara thought the bubbles were delicious. In related news: Simon will not be allowed to wear this t-shirt anymore. It makes him look like a […]
King of the Cowboys
We’ve been watching westerns from the 1950s on Netflix, particularly Roy Rogers films. Yesterday, after I had laid Clara down for her afternoon nap, I made some peanut butter popcorn and settled in on the couch with the boys to watch Twilight in the Sierras (1950). I dozed off, and when I woke I asked Simon to catch […]

These Days: Snow on the Balcony
High on the boys’ to-do list today was a snowball fight on the balcony. As it happened, they more threw snowballs off the balcony, trying to hit various targets — all the better, as far as I am concerned. Clara gleefully watched and stayed nice and dry inside.
